Meet Beth, The Owner of Beeze's Handmade Gift Shop

Talking about yourself is never easy, is it? I'll try not to waffle on but it seems appropriate to start our blogging journey with how Beeze's came to life back in 2017, which all starts with, well... me!

So hi, I'm Beth! I started my business journey when I was 26. I was sofa surfing after a messy break up (which, of course, ended up being a blessing) and had thrown my entire bank account at opening a new shop and leaving behind a steady income.  It was a scary time to say the least, but I was determined to see it through, despite my somewhat crazy change in circumstances.

Where did the idea come from? Well, I had zero experience working in retail, but had years worth of knowledge about the hospitality industry, having worked in pubs since I was young teen.  Whilst they are very different beasts for sure, there were definitely a whole heap of transferable skills which helped me along my way.

I had always worked for small businesses and knew that I wanted to run my own one day, but a pub just wasn't an option for me - it wasn't something I wanted to take on alone.  Having left the pub to work a stepping stone job for some headspace, I started getting crafty again, something I hadn't done for years. Then I woke up one morning with THE idea. I was going to open my very own little shop which would be full to the brim of quirky, handmade items made by talented artists and creatives. Perfect.

I didn't even know Devizes existed at the time, but I stumbled across it, found a lovely empty unit down a quirky little alleyway and the rest, as they say, is history!

It didn't quite start out 'full to the brim' as I'd hoped, but to see how far it has all come now is quite incredible. It's so much more than 'just a shop'.  I've made friends, employed some amazing local people, met the love of my life, bought a house, become a step mum (pretty much anyway!), brought a little pup to the family AND opened Little B's, a second shop which is next door.

None of this would have happened had I not decided to take that leap, and had I not 'stumbled across Devizes'.  If someone told me 5 years ago that this would all start to happen in 6 months time, I'd definitely have not believed them!
